Windows 7 Backup - Backing up to multiple disks
Posted by on 07 September 2016 04:30 PM

Windows 7 Backup is designed for use on a PC and therefore you cannot create a scheduled backup to run to multiple disks.

This may be a requirement where a PC is being used as a server and needs a backup configuration of more than 1 drive so that one can be kept offsite.

Work around:

The work around is to use the wbadmin start backup commands and a scheduled tasks.

What you need to do is :

  • 1. Create a backup script
    • Open notepad
    • Use the commands in this link to create a one time backup task to run: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc742083(v=ws.11).aspx
    • For example: wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\?\Volume{********-****-****-****-***********} -include:C: -vssFull -quiet
    • The above will run a full backup in the background to the disk with that volume name.
    • To get the volume name of the backup drive, open a command prompt and type: mountvol
    • Once you are happy with it save the script with an appropriate name followed by the extension .bat and change the save as type to 'All Files (*.*)'
    • You will need to create a script per drive

  • 2. Create a scheduled task
    • Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Task Scheduler
    • In the new window that opens right click on Task scheduler Library and select 'Create Task'
    • On the General tab, give the task a name and description e.g. Back to Disk 1
    • Select 'Run whether user is logged in or not'
    • On the Triggers tab, click new, select on a schedule from the top drop down list
    • Select the appropriate schedule, if there are 2 drives and one week you want it to run everyday in week 1 to drive 1 then:
      • Select Weekly
      • Set the start date and time you want it to run
      • Set the recur every 2 weeks
      • Tick the days you want it to run, e.g. every week day.
    • Make sure enabled is ticked at the bottom
    • On the Actions tab, press new
    • Set the action as start program, browse to the script you have created above and press ok
    • Press ok again once done, you will need to give it the credentials of an admin user to run as.
    • You will need to create a task for each of the drives.

Use the 'Backup Windows Backup' Naverisk role to monitor this.
