New Server migration from SBS 2003

First of all you need to put together a project plan listing e.g.

  • Project time frame
  • Considering any disruption to the customer and plan certain actions out of hours
  • Research any software/databases that need migrating and speaking to the suppliers for support
  • Listing file/print shares and permissions

 

Server Migration steps

 

  1. On old server run the SBS best analyser tool and fix any reported issues

  1.  On the old server check the ‘file replication service’ event log for any errors and fix
  2. Apply the ‘SBS shutting down’ fix on the old server

  1. Make sure the old server is synched with the NTP server (Windows fix-it 816042)
  2. Make sure that the forest and domain levels on the old server are set to the highest possible

  1. On the new server (New server checklist)
  • Check Bios time is correct
  • Update firmware
  • Setup Raid (Raid 1)
  • Set boot controller
  • Set admin password
  • Setup iLo with static IP in network range
  • Install OS
  • Set server name
  • Setup IP settings
  • Logmein
  • Windows updates
  • Install iLO advance licence
  1. Install the server onsite making sure that the iLo port is plugged into the network
  2. Check iLO remotely
  3. Make sure that the Windows Server Essentials role is installed
  4. Add the Active Directory and DNS roles
  5. Add to local domain using Directory Domain Services config wizard
  6. Install the print & document services role
  7. Transfer FSMO roles (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn408637.aspx)
  8. Install Windows server connector on clients by browsing to http://<servername>/Connect, on each PC
  9. Install DHCP role, need to make sure that it’s disabled on the old server before doing this
  10. Migrate DHCP (http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2013/04/29/step-by-step-migration-of-dhcp-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2012.aspx)
  11. Install and prepare any third party software on the new server

 

  1. Move company data using the following command from the new server:

robocopy \\ <SourceServerName> \ <SharedSourceFolderName> <PathOfTheDestination> \ <SharedDestinationFolderName> /E /B /COPY:DATSOU /LOG:C:\Copyresults.txt

  1. Set up the shares on the new server and mapped any drives or redirected folders via GPO
  2. Set up printers via the Print & Document services console
  3. Check with users that the drives, printer and any third party software is functioning.  Also take into account any scanner SMB paths that might need repointing
  4. Switch on Previous versions on data drive
  5. Run the Windows server 2012 Best Practices Analyzer tool (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200181.aspx)
  6. Once you’re happy that everything is running on the new server you can dcpromo the old server and shut down
